Agricultural Building Permits
If you are planning to build or expand an agricultural building (such as a barn, machine shed, or other agricultural structure), you will need a building permit.
Permits help ensure:
- Projects meet zoning and setback requirements
- Larger buildings meet provincial building code standards
Contact us early to confirm what is required for your project.
Do I Need a Permit?
A permit is required for most agricultural buildings, including:
- New buildings
- Additions or expansions
- Large renovations
Requirements depend on the size of the building.
Building Size Categories
1. Small Buildings (750 ft² or less)
You must submit:
- Completed Building Permit Application Form
- Site plan (showing where the building will be located)
- Drawings or an Accessory Structure Checklist
2. Medium Buildings (751 – 6,458 ft²)
You must submit:
- Completed Building Permit Application Form
- Site plan
- Basic building plans (drafted drawings showing layout and dimensions. These do not need to be stamped)
3. Large Buildings (over 6,458 ft²)
You must submit:
- Completed Part 3 Building Permit Application Form
- Site plan
- Detailed construction drawings
- Engineer-stamped plans, including:
- Structural (building frame)
- Mechanical (heating/ventilation, if applicable)
- Electrical systems
You may also need letters of assurance from design professionals confirming responsibility for the design.
Additional requirements may apply depending on the project and building use. Please contact us to determine what documentation will be required for your project.
What is a Site Plan?
A site plan is a drawing of your property that shows:
- Property lines

- Distances to property lines and other structures
This helps ensure your project meets setback and zoning requirements.
