Decks
Do I Need a Permit?
You need a building permit if your deck or porch is:
- 24 inches (2 feet) or higher above the ground
Decks below this height may not require a permit, but must still meet zoning rules.
Deck Requirements
All decks must meet building code requirements, including:
Safety (Railings)
- Decks 24–72 inches high:
- Minimum 36-inch (3 ft) railing
- Decks over 72 inches high:
- Minimum 42-inch (3.5 ft) railing
- Openings between spindles must be no greater than 4 inches
How to Apply for a Deck Permit
Open Decks (no roof or walls)
Submit:
- Building Permit Application Form
- Completed Deck Checklist (can be used as your plans)
- Site plan showing location on your property
You may submit detailed drafted plans as well.
Covered or Enclosed Decks
Submit:
- Building Permit Application Form
- Site plan
- Engineered drawings
These structures are more complex and require professional design.
Important Notes
- A refundable deposit will apply to covered/enclosed decks
- Pergolas do not require a permit
Inspections
Inspections may be required during construction to ensure safety and compliance.
Contact the Municipality to schedule inspections.
Fences & Hedges
Do I Need a Permit?
- No permit is required to build a fence or plant a hedge
However, you must follow zoning rules.
Height Rules
- Rear and side yards: up to 6 ft
- Front yard: up to 4 ft
Corner lots may have additional restrictions for visibility and safety.
Agricultural Zones
- Height limits do not apply in agricultural zones
Property Lines
- Fences can be built up to the property line
- It is the property owner’s responsibility to:
- Confirm property boundaries
- Avoid encroachment
Before You Build
- Request utility locates before digging
- This helps avoid damage to underground services
Concrete Driveways
- No permit fee is required
